The fast paced world today requires us to know how to beat stress. Whatever happens, whether you are aware of it or not, help from yourself and from others will be needed to keep stress at the losing end. It will always be your choice if you want to overcome it or not, but you have to know what to do. Here are five basic things you can do to beat stress.

Exercise regularly. I believe that regular exercise is a good way to beat stress. The heart rate increases when an individual engage in this type of physical activity. This results to the release of an antidepressant in the body called endorphins. However, it is advisable to seek an approval of your physician before engaging in such activity. Walking, aerobic dancing, running and cycling are good for general conditioning. Any of these exercises should be done for a minimum of 30 minutes per session at least three times a week for consistency. Warm up and cool down stretches should be included in the program to avoid risks of injuries.

Watch your diet. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for me because it helps me beat stress and I always end it with a cup of coffee. It keeps me on the go. But I have to admit that I am often guilty of an unbalanced meal. Have protein and fiber at breakfast to keep you going. Drink plenty of water while working or if you want something more flavorful, have warm milk, green tea, black tea or cocoa instead of coffee to keep you from dehydration. You can also eat small healthy snacks like vegetable sticks, a piece of fruit or whole grain bread during your coffee break. Don’t wait to feel hungry before you eat. Beat stress by not being hungry or dehydrated.

Get enough sleep. Everyone needs a total of eight-hour sleep everyday to beat stress. If you have difficulty falling asleep, set a definite time to go to bed. When you commit to yourself that you will go to bed at 10 pm every night, make it a point that you do. It takes discipline to beat stress. Give time for your body clock to adopt this. Also it would be helpful if you don’t do other activities in bed but sleep… and make love.

Take a warm shower with a scented body wash. After your shower, light a scented candle and tuck yourself between the freshly washed sheets. Aromatherapy is an effective way to beat stress. Some play their favorite music when they go to bed, what i do is set my television on a 30 minute sleep mode at a late news telecast. I close my eyes and listen as if I am hearing a bedtime story. This is my way to forget about work concerns and fall asleep.

Know and share. The man is the only creature capable to think and rationalize. Know your strengths and weaknesses. To beat stress, focus on your strengths because these will build you up. Learn to say no on things that you can not do. Your weaknesses can be overcome. Ask help from the right people if you can not do something alone. Share the burden, you don’t have to be superman or wonder woman all the time to beat stress.

Manage your time. Use an organizer to note your appointments. Make a list of the things you must do for the following day and use pencil to keep it flexible. I suggest you make a second list for backup. Time management is not about strict compliance but getting things done in order and as necessary to help you beat stress. There will be times when you can’t do everything on the list, that will be fine… you are human.

There are other ways to beat stress specially work related ones. Most important principle: Leave work issues at your work place. Then you can start relaxing and break any monotony in your routine. Take a walk at the park. Enjoy the flowers around or watch the sunset. When you get home, watch a show suggested by a friend or play a video game online. If you don’t usually cook dinner, prepare your favorite meal for the night Your comfort food helps beat stress. Enjoy it with someone close to your heart.

All these help beat stress but the best and most fun to do is have a good laugh the end of the day.
